Waverly PD participates in St. Baldricks event
March 26, 2011
A number of Pike County residents, including many students, spent St. Patrick’s Day losing their hair for a good cause.

Two St. Baldrick’s Day events, one at the Pike County Career Technology Center (CTC) and one at Waverly High School, helped raise money on Thursday to fund research for cures to childhood cancer. This was the third year for the event at the CTC, and approximately 23 CTC students, staff members and other community members had their heads shaved in order to raise money and show solidarity with children diagnosed with cancer. The total amount raised by the CTC was $1,380.37.

“We can’t thank you enough,” event organizer Robert Deering told the students and staff. “It’s just amazing what a group getting together can do.”

Deering praised the students for making sacrifices in order to bring in money for the cause.

“That’s people bringing in their spare change, and instead of buying that extra bottle of pop … you’re throwing it in a jar, and it’s all going to go to a great cause,” he said.

Among those having their heads shaved was Waverly Fire Chief Randy Armbruster and several CTC instructors. The shaving was done by local hair stylists, but since Health Academy 12A raised the most money, students from the program were allowed to help shave CTC instructor Leigh Thompson’s head.

The event in Waverly raised close to $2,000, according to organizer Jared Roe.

“We had around 20 heads shaved, with two of them being women,” said Roe, who himself took to the chair and sported a mohawk for most of the day.

“Even though I didn’t get to keep the mohawk, I still had a great time,” he said jokingly. “I am already looking forward to planning another event next year.”

Among those losing their hair for a good cause were Pike County Sheriff Richard Henderson, Waverly Police Chief Larry Roe, High School Principal Bill Hoover, other administrators, teachers and students. Two of the county’s top lawmen said they were happy with their new haircuts.

“It definitely feels a lot lighter,” said Henderson.

“And much cooler,” added Chief Roe.

“It was a worthwhile cause and anything we can do for kids with cancer, we will absolutely do,” said Henderson.

Tina Shepherd, a cancer survivor, delivered a speech to the students as part of the event as well.
Pair arrested for arson - other arrests made in March
A Pike County pair has been arrested and jailed for allegedly trying to set fire to a Market Street building.

According to Waverly Police Chief Larry Roe, Sargent Brian Anderson noticed a large amount of smoke emanating from a building located on the old Mid Ohio Chemical property, shortly after midnight on Tuesday. Two suspects were located inside the structure.

Arrested were 26-year-old Gina L. Dale, of Piketon, and 35-year-old Donald R. Smith, of Lucasville. Both were charged with arson, breaking and entering and possession of criminal tools. Roe said that Smith attempted to flee the scene on foot and was additionally charged with resisting arrest.

Both were lodged in the Scioto County Jail and the incident remains under investigation.
